The Pilot

My name is Ariel Scheirer, but you can call me the “accidental aviator.” I didn’t aspire to be a pilot growing up, though my parents took me on plenty of planes (from the U.S. to Western Eastern Europe — Austria, Romania, Poland — in the 80′s, and then to Moscow, Russia, where we lived ’91-’95). A career-change in 2009 found me as a support contractor to the Federal Aviation Administration. As I learned more about the aviation field, I started to wonder how I could gain more of the “inside scoop” on aviation. A friend suggested flight lessons. The idea took hold in full force, and in November of 2009, I sat behind the controls in a Cessna-152 for the first time as part of a “Discovery Flight.”

After that first take-off and landing, I knew that flying was for me. I am now enrolled in the FAR 141 Flight Program at Dulles Aviation in Manassas, VA, approximately an hour West of DC/Alexandria, VA. A year ago I would never have thought that I would be spending hours behind the controls of a Cessna-172/182, let alone be working to set up an aircraft rental company. Now my goal is to obtain my private pilot’s license in 2011.

  1. We flew on some pretty small planes, like the one from Wroclaw to Warsaw, remember? The flight that takes the cake was that awful Tarom flight on the same itinerary. Remember: 1. The bathrooms 2. The stewardess passing out hard candy to suck on during the landing in Bucharest? Hard to top!
